I loved watching James Cameron's blockbuster movie "Avatar". It was visually stunning and as long as my brain was turned to the "OFF" position, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. And, that's why we go to the movies, to be entertained mindlessly, right? Wrong! Some of us, require a little dept in our entertainment. I never liked the cartoon "Tom & Jerry"; it was stupid violence. However, I consider "South Park" a brilliant assessment of current society's foibles. Thus, despite Avatar's beautiful presentation, the message was lousy. As an African American, I resent the fact that Black people still don't exist in the future except as aliens. I resent being served warmed over plot stolen from "Dancing with Wolves", Disney's "Pocahontas", and dozens of other depictions of the "noble savage." My suggestion: Boycott, demand better movies. Make a federal law that all movies hire competent writers and compassionate producers. Mr. Cameron, we loved your presentation but please break away from the old, tired, false stereotypes of the white male warrior saving the dumb but lovable (sexy) savages. Give us more provoking stories of how potential conquerors have been beaten back by the natives (Shaka Zulu lead his people to defeat the white Europeans). Put a little intellect into your movies (the blue natives possess superior technology). Remember to never make another movie with only white people as the leading characters if you want my dollar (I hated Titantic). Lastly, I fear that America has only two types of people: people who think and others that don't. Race or class has nothing to do with it. I want to see more movies for people who think. |
